Attending The F1 Austin Grand Prix

USA

If you're a fan of motorsports, the Formula One Austin Grand Prix is a must-see event. Held at the Circuit of the Americas, the first purpose-built Formula One facility in the United States, the Austin Grand Prix attracts racing enthusiasts from around the world.

Here are some top tips to help you plan your visit to the Austin Grand Prix.

Getting There

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is located about 20 minutes from downtown Austin and is served by many major airlines. You can also fly into San Antonio International Airport, which is about 90 miles from Austin.

If you're driving, the Circuit of the Americas is located just southeast of downtown Austin, and is easily accessible from Interstate 35 and State Highway 130.

Where to Stay

There are plenty of hotel options in and around downtown Austin, which is located about 15 miles from the Circuit of the Americas. Keep in mind that during the Grand Prix weekend prices can be high and places get full quick, so it's best to book your accommodations well in advance.

For a more unique experience, you might consider renting an RV or camping at the track. The Circuit of the Americas has RV spaces and tent camping available, and staying at the track is a great way to fully immerse yourself in the racing atmosphere.

What to Do

The Formula One Austin Grand Prix is more than just a race; it's a weekend-long celebration of motorsports. Here are a few things you won't want to miss:

  • Practice and Qualifying Sessions: The on-track action begins on Friday with practice sessions, and continues on Saturday with qualifying rounds. These sessions are a great way to see the cars and drivers up close, and to get a sense of the atmosphere at the track. If you only have Sunday tickets, don't worry, you can still find some F1 atmosphere among the many bars, restaurants, and other lively spaces in Austin.

  • Fan Fest: Located in downtown Austin, Fan Fest is a free event that takes place on Friday and Saturday nights during Grand Prix weekend. The festival features live music, food and drinks, and interactive displays, and is a great way to get into the racing spirit.

  • Concerts: In addition to the racing action, the Austin Grand Prix features nightly concerts by top musicians. Past performers have included Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, and Justin Timberlake.

  • Fan Zone: Located at the track, the Fan Zone is a hub of activity during the Grand Prix weekend. It features interactive displays, racing simulators, and merchandise vendors, and is a great place to soak up the racing atmosphere.

  • Pop-ups: Throughout the weekend some of the F1 teams host different events and pop-ups throughout the city. Just do a simple online search around the time of the race weekend and you'll be sure to discover various happenings.

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen: The Texas sun can be intense, even in the fall. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, and wear a hat or sunglasses to protect your face.

  • Merch: Of course don't forget your favourite driver or team's merch, if you have any! Almost everyone there is wearing F1 merch and accessories, and showing driver/team pride. You can buy stuff there but keep in mind it is more expensive.

  • Comfortable Shoes: The Circuit of the Americas is a large facility, and you'll be doing a lot of walking during the Grand Prix weekend. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and ones you don't mind getting dirty as it can get very dusty there.

  • Cash: Although many vendors at the track accept credit cards, it's a good idea to bring cash for parking, food and drinks, and merchandise.

  • Water bottle: There are several water bottle refill stations throughout the circuit so it's a good idea to bring your own reusable bottle instead of buying overpriced water there.

  • Earplugs: The noise level at a Formula One race can be overwhelming, so it's a good idea to bring earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones.

  • Hand sanitizer: Generally always a good idea.

  • Portable charger: You will most likely be taking lots of pictures and videos which can drain your phone battery, and it is also a long day, so it doesn't hurt to have some extra

General COTA Tips

  • Use the shuttle services. The downtown Austin shuttle is the most popular and I recommend booking it in advance.

  • Prepare for lots of heat, wind, and dust.

  • Get there early or spend time at the circuit throughout the weekend, there is so much going on.

  • There are radio headphones for sale at the circuit if you want to hear the usual live commentary that you hear on TV. However, they are pretty expensive. They are not necessary but can be useful to keep track of what's happening during the race, especially at track points outside of your area.

  • There are lots of food options at the circuit but they can be a little overpriced, so feel free to eat before or bring some snacks.

  • Walk the track after the race! Such a fun and unique experience bringing all the fans together on the track.

  • Plan a lot of time when leaving the circuit once the race is over. The lines getting out are crazy.

With its unique blend of high-speed racing, live music, and Texas hospitality, the Formula One Austin Grand Prix is a one-of-a-kind experience. By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to enjoying an unforgettable weekend at the track.
